Car networking patent cited lawsuit Daimler convicted of infringement

2020-09-01

A few days ago, the German Magistrate Mannheim made a verdict on the patent dispute between Nokia and Daimler: Daimler infringed Nokia's mobile technology patent. This is the second of 10 lawsuits filed by Nokia against Daimler. In the first patent case in February this year, the court ruled that Nokia lost.

Daimler stated that the company did not understand why the court reached such a conclusion and said it would continue to appeal. Nokia said that the court confirmed that its mobile phone standard-essential patent (SEP) authorization was fair and Daimler had used Nokia's technology without authorization.

  Review

There are many conflicts of interest hidden behind a patent lawsuit. There is a dispute over the patent licensing fees of the two in the fields of vehicle communication and autonomous vehicles. Nokia requires automobile supplier Daimler to pay for the patent use separately according to the product, while Daimler believes that such a request is suspected of being a monopoly. The results of patent disputes based on the two have a greater impact on the industry, so some suppliers, including Continental and Bosch, support Daimler. The patent war between Nokia and Daimler, on the surface, is a grievance between the two companies, but in essence it highlights the broader interest struggle between the communications and automotive industries.
